Hello! In this entry we are going to talk about out trip to Dürnstein on the 30th of September of 2020. We went there with our university (Kirchliche Pädagogische Hochschule Wien/Krems) and really enjoyed it!.
Dürnstein is a city of 900 inhabitants in Lower Austria. It is one of the tourist destinations of the Wachau region and also a very important a wine production center. Above the place, accessible by a path, are the ruins of a castle where King Richard I of England was held prisoner in the 12th century.
We went there walking along the Danube, passing through small towns and wonderful natural landscapes. Once we arrived to the town, we went on a "quest" in which we should follow a route guided by some historical figures that "told" the story of how King Richard I of England was enraptured at the Dürnstein Castle. We followed the path and climbed the hill to finally arrive to the castle, where we meet with our teachers. The route was really interesting to make, since apart of being in a beautiful place, it also taught us about the history of the place in a more unconventional way. After that we had some free time to explore the city and its charm, and then we started the journey back to Krems.
During the excursion we were given some traditional foods from the region, as Semmel, a sort of bread bun, and Manner, a typical Austrian chocolate filled waffle. We also learnt about some facts about austrian culture and traditions, and we also bonded with our friends and classmates during the time we were walking to the town.
Once we arrived to Krems, we had a bit of free time just before our next stop of the day, a dinner at Heuriger Müller. Heuriger is the name given to many places in Austria where wine is served and the owners, who are usually winegrowers, allow people to experience Gemütlichkeit (the feeling of being comfortable), they also offer different kinds of foods and charcuterie boards. We tried the typical Spitzer Wine and traditional austrians meals, and we really liked the experience!
We really enjoyed this trip, and we really recommend the experience if you want to visit the Wachau region, since Dürnstein is a incredibly beautiful town with a lot of history to offer! Also if you are planning to visit the region, you definitely have to try Heuriger! It is a unique experience you can not miss!
