Trip to Göttweig Abbey (Benediktinerstift Göttweig)

Hi! In this entry we are going to talk about our trip to Göttweig Abbey on the 29th of september of 2020. We went there with our university (Kirchliche Pädagogische Hochschule Wien/Krems) and we had a wonderful time!.

Göttweig Abbey (German: Stift Göttweig) is a Benedictine monastery near Krems in Lower Austria. It was founded in 1083 by Altmann, Bishop of Passau. The abbey has a library of 150,000 books and manuscripts, and a particularly important collection of religious engravings, besides valuable collections of coins, antiquities, musical manuscripts and natural history, all of which survived the dangers of World War II and its immediate aftermath almost without loss. The abbey is part of the Wachau, a UNESCO World Heritage landscape, and in the museum Kaiser trakt visitors can see multiple Baroque works as the Imperial Staircase: Apotheosis of Charles VI (fresco by Paul Troger, 1739).

To begin with our trip, we took a train from Krems an der Donau to the Furth b.Göttweig Station. If you are taking the train really often, we recommend you to buy the ÖBB Vorteilscard Jugend Card, that gives you a really good discount in a lot of public transport tickets.

When we arrived there, we visited some parts of the Abbey, like the church and the museum. We also spent some time on the outside on a beautiful viewpoint from where you could see the city of Krems from the above. Inside the museum, one of the things we liked the most, was the Imperial Staircase, a staircase that has a incredible painting on the ceiling, the Napoleon's room, where he spent some time living, and the Tapestry room, that had multiple and unique pieces of tapestry displayed.

After that we walked back to the town. We took a two hours route and in the meantime we got to meet each other a little bit more, and also we enjoyed the beautiful landscapes you could see on the side.

We really liked the excursion and we really recommend doing it!

Some pictures of our trip....
